From Zero to HSK 3 in 12 Months

When I arrived in Taiwan for my Master's, I genuinely knew zero Mandarin. One year later, I passed HSK 3 and can navigate daily life and hold basic conversations.

Month 1–2: Survival Mode

I focused exclusively on practical survival phrases — not tones, not grammar.

Week 1 priority list:
• Numbers 1–100
• "How much?" (多少錢?)
• "Where is...?" (在哪裡?)
• "Excuse me / Sorry" (不好意思)

Month 3–6: Building a Foundation

Free resources that worked:

  • Pleco app — Best Chinese dictionary. Use it constantly.

  • ChinesePod (free tier) — Excellent listening practice

  • HelloChinese app — Gamified, good for characters

  • iTalki — Language exchange partner (free — trade English lessons)
  • My daily routine (1 hour):
    • 20 min: Anki flashcards (HSK 2 deck)
    • 20 min: ChinesePod podcast
    • 20 min: Language exchange

    Month 6–12: Immersion

    • Changed my phone to Traditional Chinese
    • Stopped going to English-menu restaurants
    • Joined a Taiwanese hiking group
    • Watched Taiwanese variety shows with Chinese subtitles

    My Honest Assessment

Mandarin is hard. But Taiwan is the best possible environment to learn — locals are incredibly patient and appreciate your effort. Start Day 1.
